Formula and calculation logic
Holiday pay = annual salary × holiday-pay rate
Employer contribution = (salary + holiday pay) × rate for selected zone; total annual employer cost = salary + holiday pay + employer contribution
Holiday pay is calculated on the annual salary with the rate you choose. The default is 12%, the rate tied to five weeks of holiday in much of the labour market.
Employer national insurance is a percentage of salary plus holiday pay. The percentage depends on the zone of the workplace, from 14.1% in zone I to 0% in zone V.
Zone Ia is offered at 10.6%. That reduced rate applies only until the enterprise has used its allowance. Above the allowance, zone Ia pay is charged at 14.1%.
Assumptions
- Pension contributions, employer's liability insurance, tools, and payroll fees are not included.
- The salary is the agreed cash salary. Taxable benefits can also be part of the national-insurance base.
- Holiday pay is treated as an amount on top of the annual salary, which is the usual way to budget a full-time role.

Questions about this tool
Which zone should I choose?
Use the zone of the municipality where the work is done. Oslo and most large cities are zone I at 14.1%. The tax office publishes the municipality list.
Does the employee pay this national insurance?
No. Employer national insurance is paid by the employer. The 7.6% national insurance inside the salary tools is the employee's own contribution.
Why is the total higher than salary plus 14.1%?
The 14.1% is also charged on holiday pay. A 12% holiday-pay rate in zone I adds about 14.1% of 112% of salary, not 14.1% of salary alone.
