Formula and calculation logic

Base overtime pay = hourly wage × overtime hours

Supplement = base overtime pay × supplement rate; total = base + supplement

Total pay equals hours times the hourly wage, plus the same amount times the supplement. A 40% supplement on 500 NOK an hour is 200 NOK extra per hour, so the hour pays 700 NOK before tax.

The Working Environment Act requires a supplement of at least 40% for overtime. Workplaces often agree 50% or 100% instead.

Ordinary full-time hours are often 37.5 a week even though the Act's overtime line is drawn at 40 hours or 9 hours in a day. Follow the limit in your agreement when you count the hours.

Assumptions

  • The hourly wage is the wage used for overtime in your contract, not a salary divided by a guessed number of hours, unless that is how your contract defines it.
  • The result is before tax. Overtime pay is normally taxable and is part of the holiday-pay basis.
  • Time off in lieu, if you agree to it, replaces the ordinary hourly pay but not the supplement. This page does not model time off.

Questions about this tool

What supplement should I use if I am unsure?

Use 40% only as the legal floor. Check the collective agreement or the employment contract before you rely on the number.

Does this include the ordinary hourly pay?

Yes. The total includes both the base pay for the hours and the supplement. The breakdown shows them apart.

Are overtime hours capped?

The Act limits how much overtime can be worked. This tool prices the hours you enter. It does not check those limits.
