Formula and calculation logic
Bracket tax = Σ[max(0, min(personal income, band ceiling) − band floor) × band rate]
Marginal bracket rate = change in bracket tax for the next 1,000 NOK ÷ 10
Bracket tax is calculated on personal income, which for an employee is generally salary. It does not use ordinary income after deductions.
Each rate applies only to the income slice inside that band. Reaching a higher band does not make all your income taxable at the higher rate.
This page shows bracket tax only. It does not include the 22% tax on ordinary income, national insurance, deductions, or wealth tax.
Assumptions
- Uses the five published 2026 bracket-tax bands for an employee who is resident in Norway for the full year.
- Annual salary is used as a proxy for personal income. Business income and income that is not salary may be treated differently.
- This page calculates bracket tax only. Use the main Norway tax tool for ordinary-income tax, national insurance, deductions, or taxable net wealth.

Questions about this tool
Is bracket tax the same as the 22% ordinary-income tax?
No. The 22% tax is charged on ordinary income after deductions and the personal allowance. Bracket tax is a separate state tax on personal income above the 2026 thresholds.
Which rate applies to the top slice of a high salary?
For 2026, personal income above 1,467,200 NOK is charged bracket tax at 17.8% on that top slice. The slices below keep their own lower rates.
Can I use this for a sole proprietorship?
Not as a final figure. Business income has a different national-insurance rate, 10.8% in 2026, and the profit calculation is different from wages.
