Fuel cost tool
Fuel prices move every week. Enter the distance you drive, how many litres the car uses per 100 kilometres, and the price you actually pay per litre. The page returns the year's fuel bill, the typical month, and the cost per kilometre.
Quick math
Use this for quick arithmetic, percentages, or to check figures while filling in the main tool, without leaving the page.
Estimate
15,600 NOK per year
- Annual energy cost
- 15,600 NOK
- Monthly energy cost
- 1,300 NOK
- Cost per kilometre
- 1.30 NOK
How this breaks down
- Annual litres
- 780
- Distance
- 12,000 km
Covers energy only. Insurance, depreciation, tolls, and service are separate.
How to use this tool
- Use Fuel Cost Tool for the question described above, and check that the inputs match your records and time period.
- Enter kilometres per year.
- Enter litres per 100 km.
- Enter price per litre (Example price. Use the price you pay.).
- Change kilometres per year, litres per 100 km, price per litre to compare scenarios, then check the units in the result.
Worked example with the prefilled values
This example shows how Fuel Cost Tool uses its starting values. Change the calculator inputs to estimate your own situation.
- Kilometres per year
- 12000 km
- Litres per 100 km
- 6.5
- Price per litre
- 20 NOK
15,600 NOK per year
- Annual energy cost15,600 NOK
- Monthly energy cost1,300 NOK
- Cost per kilometre1.30 NOK
Covers energy only. Insurance, depreciation, tolls, and service are separate.
Formula and calculation logic
Annual fuel use (litres) = annual kilometres ÷ 100 × fuel use per 100 km
Annual fuel cost = annual fuel use × price per litre; cost per km = annual cost ÷ annual kilometres
Litres for the year equal the distance divided by 100, times the consumption. Cost is litres times the price.
Use the car's own figure if you have it. A brochure figure is often lower than winter driving, short trips, and a roof box.
The sample price is a round number so the form is not empty. It is not a quote for today's pump price.
Assumptions
- One price is used for the whole year. You can enter a cautious average.
- AdBlue, oil, and electricity for a plug-in hybrid are not included.

Questions about this tool
How do I handle a plug-in hybrid?
Run this page for the fuel you buy, and the charging tool for the electricity. Add the two annual totals.
Should the price include VAT?
Use the price on the pump. Pump prices in Norway are shown including VAT and fuel excise.
Is consumption in litres per 10 km or per 100 km?
Per 100 km, which is the figure manufacturers and trip computers usually show.
