Planning estimate for a resident employee in tax class 1, using published 2026 rates. Monthly net pay is the annual figure divided by 12. Your tax deduction card can withhold a different amount, and Skatteetaten calculates the final tax on your return.

Formula and calculation logic

Each row applies the tax calculation to gross salary = start salary + (row index × salary step)

Net annual = gross salary − ordinary-income tax − bracket tax − national insurance; net monthly = net annual ÷ 12

Every row assumes no extra deductions and no wealth tax. Two people with the same wage can still owe different tax once interest, a commute, or a spouse's situation is included.

The effective rate is total salary tax divided by gross pay. It rises with income, but it is always below the marginal rate on the next krone.

Net monthly pay is the row's net annual pay divided by 12.

Assumptions

  • The person is a full-year resident taxed in class 1.
  • The amount entered is wages. Share income, benefits, and business income are left out.
  • The 2026 minimum deduction is 46% of wages, and it stops at 95,700 NOK.
  • The 2026 personal allowance is 114,540 NOK. It cannot create a tax refund by itself.
  • Bracket tax uses the five 2026 bands on personal income, from 1.7% to 17.8%.
  • National insurance on wages is 7.6%, with no contribution at or below 99,650 NOK and a 25% phase-in above that.
  • Take-home pay is gross pay minus tax on ordinary income, bracket tax, and national insurance. A tax card can spread that differently across the months.
  • The printed table does not change when you edit the salary field. The field updates the estimate above the table.

Questions about this tool

Is this the withholding table on a tax card?

No. Skatteetaten withholding tables decide how much an employer deducts each payday. This table is an end-of-year estimate of the tax itself.

Why does the effective rate look lower than the top rate I have read about?

The top marginal rate applies only to the slice of income above the highest threshold. Income below that slice is taxed less, so the average is lower.

Can I compare two job offers here?

Yes, if both offers are wages and you enter each gross annual salary. Remember to put holiday pay and a taxable bonus into the annual total when they are part of the offer.
