How to use this tool
- Use Norway Tax Tool for the question described above, and check that the inputs match your records and time period.
- Enter income year (Choose an income year from 2016 to 2026. This estimate uses the published rates for the selected year.).
- Enter annual gross salary (Pay for the whole year, before tax.).
- Enter other deductions (Interest and similar deductions. Leave 0 to use only the standard minimum deduction.).
- Enter taxable net wealth (After valuation discounts. Wealth at or below 1,900,000 NOK has no wealth tax in 2026.).
- Change income year, annual gross salary, other deductions, taxable net wealth to compare scenarios, then check the units in the result.

Formula and calculation logic
Minimum deduction = clamp(gross salary × statutory rate, statutory floor, statutory cap)
Ordinary-income tax = max(0, gross − minimum deduction − other deductions − personal allowance) × ordinary tax rate
Total salary tax = ordinary-income tax + sum(income slice × bracket rate) + national insurance; net annual = gross − salary tax; net monthly = net annual ÷ 12
Ordinary income is wages minus the minimum deduction, minus any other deductions you enter, minus the personal allowance. That amount is taxed at 22%.
Bracket tax is worked out on wages themselves, not on ordinary income. Each band has its own rate, and only the income inside that band uses the rate.
National insurance uses the 7.6% wage rate, but income near the lower threshold pays the smaller phase-in amount instead. Wealth tax, if you enter a taxable net wealth above 1.9 million NOK, is shown separately because it is not a deduction from monthly salary.
Assumptions
- The person is a full-year resident taxed in class 1.
- The amount entered is wages. Share income, benefits, and business income are left out.
- The 2026 minimum deduction is 46% of wages, and it stops at 95,700 NOK.
- The 2026 personal allowance is 114,540 NOK. It cannot create a tax refund by itself.
- Bracket tax uses the five 2026 bands on personal income, from 1.7% to 17.8%.
- National insurance on wages is 7.6%, with no contribution at or below 99,650 NOK and a 25% phase-in above that.
- Take-home pay is gross pay minus tax on ordinary income, bracket tax, and national insurance. A tax card can spread that differently across the months.
- Enter taxable net wealth after the valuation discounts, not the market price of a home. Leave it at 0 to skip wealth tax.
- The top of the marginal-rate line is about 47.4% before employer contributions: 22% plus 17.8% bracket tax plus 7.6% national insurance.

Questions about this tool
Does this match the tax on my tax return?
No. It is a planning estimate for a straightforward wage earner. Your return can include a spouse, commuter costs, BSU saving, disability allowance, and other items this page does not ask for.
Why is national insurance calculated on gross pay?
For employees, personal income for bracket tax and national insurance is broadly the wage itself. The minimum deduction and the personal allowance reduce the 22% tax, not those two charges.
What should I type for other deductions?
Use amounts that reduce ordinary income, such as interest on debt. Do not type the minimum deduction or the personal allowance. The tool already applies both.
