Formula and calculation logic

Minimum deduction = clamp(gross salary × statutory rate, statutory floor, statutory cap)

Ordinary-income tax = max(0, gross − minimum deduction − other deductions − personal allowance) × ordinary tax rate

Total salary tax = ordinary-income tax + sum(income slice × bracket rate) + national insurance; net annual = gross − salary tax; net monthly = net annual ÷ 12

A monthly gross amount is multiplied by 12 before tax is calculated. Tax is an annual system, so a single month is not taxed in isolation.

The result leads with yearly and monthly net pay. Open the breakdown to see the minimum deduction, the personal allowance, and each tax component.

If your gross pay changes during the year, add the amounts you expect to receive and enter the total as an annual figure.

Assumptions

  • The person is a full-year resident taxed in class 1.
  • The amount entered is wages. Share income, benefits, and business income are left out.
  • The 2026 minimum deduction is 46% of wages, and it stops at 95,700 NOK.
  • The 2026 personal allowance is 114,540 NOK. It cannot create a tax refund by itself.
  • Bracket tax uses the five 2026 bands on personal income, from 1.7% to 17.8%.
  • National insurance on wages is 7.6%, with no contribution at or below 99,650 NOK and a 25% phase-in above that.
  • Take-home pay is gross pay minus tax on ordinary income, bracket tax, and national insurance. A tax card can spread that differently across the months.

Questions about this tool

Should I enter pay before or after tax?

Enter gross pay, the amount before income tax and national insurance are withheld.

Why does a monthly salary not simply lose a flat percentage?

The personal allowance and the lower bracket thresholds are annual. A flat percentage would overstate tax on a low salary and understate it on a high one.

Are employee benefits included?

Only if their taxable value is already inside the gross amount you enter. A company car or a free newspaper can be taxable even when it is not cash.
