Formula and calculation logic
Minimum deduction = clamp(gross salary × statutory rate, statutory floor, statutory cap)
Ordinary-income tax = max(0, gross − minimum deduction − other deductions − personal allowance) × ordinary tax rate
Total salary tax = ordinary-income tax + sum(income slice × bracket rate) + national insurance; net annual = gross − salary tax; net monthly = net annual ÷ 12
The tool treats the number you enter as the taxable wage for the year. If holiday pay is paid on top of that wage, the taxable total is higher than the figure in the contract headline.
Net monthly pay is net annual pay divided by 12. June often looks different in a real payslip because holiday pay is paid then and ordinary withholding has been adjusted through the year.
The marginal rate shows how much of an extra 1,000 NOK of wages would go to tax. That is the useful figure when a raise, bonus, or overtime payment is on the table.
Assumptions
- The person is a full-year resident taxed in class 1.
- The amount entered is wages. Share income, benefits, and business income are left out.
- The 2026 minimum deduction is 46% of wages, and it stops at 95,700 NOK.
- The 2026 personal allowance is 114,540 NOK. It cannot create a tax refund by itself.
- Bracket tax uses the five 2026 bands on personal income, from 1.7% to 17.8%.
- National insurance on wages is 7.6%, with no contribution at or below 99,650 NOK and a 25% phase-in above that.
- Take-home pay is gross pay minus tax on ordinary income, bracket tax, and national insurance. A tax card can spread that differently across the months.
- No extra deductions and no wealth tax are applied on this page. Use the Norway tax tool if you want to add them.

Questions about this tool
Is the monthly amount what will be in my account?
It is the average month. Withholding follows your tax card. December is often a half-tax month, and the holiday-pay month is often taxed differently from the other months.
Does the salary include holiday pay?
Only if you included it in the annual amount. Holiday pay earned this year is often paid next year. Use the holiday pay tool for that amount on its own.
What about pension deducted from my pay?
Some employees pay a contribution into a public occupational scheme. That deduction is not subtracted here. Take it off the net figure if it applies to you.
