Education
GPA tool for Norwegian universities
Norwegian higher education grades letters, then converts them for a credit-weighted average: A is 5, B is 4, C is 3, D is 2, E is 1 and F is 0. Enter each course with its credits, called studiepoeng. The average is the credit-weighted mean.

Estimate
GPA 4.00
- Weighted GPA
- 4.00
- Credits
- 50
- Courses counted
- 5
How this breaks down
- Courses graded A
- 2
- Courses graded B
- 2
- Courses graded C
- 1
Uses the Norwegian higher-education scale: A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D = 2, E = 1 and F = 0, weighted by credits. Upper-secondary grades from 1 to 6 use a different scale.
How to use this tool
- Use GPA Tool Norway for the question described above, and check that the inputs match your records and time period.
- Change to compare scenarios, then check the units in the result.
Formula and calculation logic
Weighted GPA = Σ(grade points × course credits) ÷ Σ(course credits); A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1, F=0
Each course contributes grade points times credits. A 10-credit A adds 50 points. A 15-credit C adds 45 points.
The GPA is total points divided by total credits. A course with more credits moves the average more.
Pass or fail courses have no letter. Leave them out. An F is included as zero if it is part of the average you are checking.
Assumptions
- This is the university and university-college scale. Upper secondary school uses grades from 1 to 6, and this page will misread those if you type them as letters.
- Institutions can have their own rounding and their own rule for which attempts count. Check the programme page before you rely on the result in an application.
- The sample courses are filled in so the page shows a worked result. Replace them with yours.

Questions about this tool
What is a good GPA on this scale?
The scale runs from 0 to 5. A programme that asks for a grade requirement will say so in its own points. There is no single national cut-off.
Do I include a course I failed?
Include it when the average you need counts failed attempts. Exclude it when the rules say only the best passing grade counts. The tool will not choose for you.
Can I add more than five courses?
Yes. Use Add course. Empty rows are ignored.
